Digital HD Conversion May Be Delayed
Rumbling toward the North and South Carolina coast, Tropical Storm Hanna may postpone the delay of the nation's first all market test of the digital television conversion.
Wilmington, N.C., is scheduled to become the first major city and media market to permanently switch to digital TV signals and receivers. It was to occur at noon Monday. But the tropical storm was approaching hurricane strength Friday and was expected to make landfall just to the south of Wilmington North Carolina early today. That's causing angst for TV broadcasters and others at the region's five commercial TV stations.
Broadcasters and Federal Communications Commission officials discussed this critical situation in two conference calls this week and they also plan to have another conversation sometime Sunday morning to decide whether they will postpone the digital HD conversion.
